From October to August 1966 Morales was able to keep the title one more time before he finally lost him to Buddy Austin. Thereafter, he focused more on the tag team division in the day he was allowed to wear team title 1966-1968 with various collaborators four times the WWA. During an engagement in the National Wrestling Alliance Morales held the Hawaiian U.S. title for two months.

WWWF

In 1970 he was for the World Wide Wrestling Federation ( WWWF short, now known as WWE) active. In January 1971 he defeated in the finals of a tournament Fred Blassie and won by the WWWF United States Championship. Then Morales feuded with then WWWF World Heavyweight Champion Bruno Sammartino. After this gave his title to Ivan Koloff, Morales won a match against Kolokoff and was thus for the first time WWWF champion. After his title win the United States Championship was declared vacant. After a new feud with Blassie Morales lost his title in December 1973 after almost three years to Stan Stasiak and left shortly afterwards the WWWF.

Independent sector

Morales went on for some time for various minor leagues in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. This included a few fights in NWA regions where he once each won the local tag team title along with Pat Patterson and Rocky Johnson.

Return to the WWF

In May 1980, he made his comeback in the World Wrestling Federation. In August, Morales won together with the then WWWF World Heavyweight Champion Bob Backlund the World Tag Team Championship, which was however denied them shortly afterwards, because as Heavyweight Champion Backlund could not hold a second title.

In December, he became the first Triple Crown champion by winning the WWF Intercontinental Championship. 1981 Morales was involved in a feud with Don Muraco, during which he lost the Intercontinental title in June but could recover in November. Muraco ended Morales time as champion in January 1983. Having Vince McMahon took control of the WWF, he was no longer involved in major feud programs, so he played his last match in late summer 1987.
