Pedro Subercaseaux

Pedro León María Subercaseaux Maximiano Errazuriz ( born December 10, 1880 in Rome, Italy, † 3 January 1956 in Santiago de Chile) was a Chilean painter who was known for his illustrative paintings to the Chilean and Argentine history. Subercaseaux Errazuriz was the son of the ambassador and painter Ramón Vicuña Subercaseaux.

Life

From 1906 Subercaseaux Errazuriz worked under the pseudonym Funny as cartoonist for the magazine Zig Zag. From 1913 he worked as an illustrator for the magazine Pacifico Magazine.

In 1907, he married Elvira Lyon Otaegui, of which he in 1920 during a trip to Europe parted to lead a religious life. In 1925 he wrote in England watercolors with an anthology of their own poems by the Danish poet Johannes Jørgensen about Francis of Assisi. In 1938 he returned with the mandate to establish a Benedictine monastery in Santiago back to Chile.
