Peeler

The peeler is a tool for peeling fruits and vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots or asparagus.

Operation

By movably arranged this blade peeler easily follows the contours of the peeling object. Of the blade faces a spacer to limit the peel thickness. This established the name peeler. There are also models in which the peel depth can be adjusted by screws. With a short protruding additional blade potato eyes or blemishes can be removed. For simple models with immovable blade peeling the object is moved by hand (older potato peeler ). Peeler with movable blade sometimes called Swivel Peeler.

Types

There are two types of vegetable peelers: those with and those lying along with transversely to the handle lying cutter head. Horizontal longitudinal blades are either both sides ( symmetrical) or only on the handle side ( asymmetrical) stored with clear top. The transverse blade for peeling long strokes, typical, suitable for Peeling cucumbers and asparagus. The longitudinally opposite blade is suitable not only for long, but also for small paring objects, such as potatoes. For this, the peeler is ergonomic and comfortable in the hand, the thumb supports and thereby leads the peeler with. For smaller objects of the peeler peeling is done with the fingers or hand, while with the Querschälern the movements are always done with the whole arm; in long peeling objects, however, the movement of the whole arm is always required. In addition, the cross and longitudinal peeler peeler have with symmetrically mounted main blade is usually a small additional blade for potato eyes, whose function is responsible for this particularly shaped blade tip at the cantilevered Längsschälern.

History

The first potato peeler with a transverse movable blade is the model " Rex ", which was invented by Alfred Neweczerzal in 1947 and patented the same year. Alfred Neweczerzal (1899-1959) was a born in Davos, Switzerland descendant of Czech emigrants and grandfather of the present (2004) owner of Zena AG. Here, this peeler is in addition to other products in the same division yet established. Two million units are produced every year, so it was in 2009 a total of over 70 million peeler. Two thirds of production is exported. The Peeler " Rex " appeared in the series " Design Classics of Switzerland " as a motif of the 15 - centime stamp of Swiss Post in 2004. For industrial purposes, and in large kitchens the potato peeler has now been largely replaced by potato peeler.
