Peg Leg Howell

Joshua Barnes Howell ( born March 5, 1888 in Eatonton, Georgia, April † 11, 1966 in Atlanta, Georgia ), known as Peg Leg Howell ( Howell wooden leg ), was an American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter.

" Peg Leg" Howell is the Atlanta Blues attributed. He is regarded as a link between the black farm workers singing and the early blues.

The farm workers Howell taught himself to play the guitar at the age of 20 years even with. 1916 had to be amputated after a shootout with his brother- his right leg, hence his nickname. 1923 Howell moved to Atlanta, where he played on the road. By the way, he ran bootlegging, which he earned in 1925 a year in jail.

After his release he made first recordings for Columbia Records. By 1929, followed by several more shots, some solo, some with Henry Williams ( guitar) and Eddie Anthony (fiddle ), who accompanied him on the street. To Howells recordings include New Prison Blues, Skin Game Blues and New Jelly Roll Blues.

After the last recordings Williams went to prison, Anthony died in 1934, and Howell was gradually forgotten. In 1952, he lost his second leg as a result of his diabetes.

1963 Howell was again "discovered" and made new recordings. He died in 1966 in Atlanta.
