Peggy Ashcroft

Dame Peggy Ashcroft, DBE ( born December 22, 1907 as Edith Margaret Emily Ashcroft in Croydon, London, † June 14, 1991 in London) was a British actress.

Life

Peggy Ashcroft occurred during its more than 50 -year-long stage career on 15 films and several television productions. For her role in David Lean's A Passage to India in 1985, she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and was at the time 77 years the oldest actress who received this award.

The role of Barbie Batchelor in the acclaimed British miniseries The Jewel in the Crown after the Roman epic of " Paul Scott " they showed on TV in 1984 also at the height of her acting. For this work she received the BAFTA Award for Best TV Actress.

In 1951, she was admitted to the Order of the British Empire and in 1956 was awarded the rank of Dame Commander.

She died on June 14 in London in 1991 at the age of 83 years on the effects of a stroke.

Family

Peggy Ashcroft was married several times, from 1940 to 1966 with Jeremy Hutchinson.
