Pehr Osbeck

Pehr Osbeck ( pronunciation: [ ˌ u ː ː ʁ PAE sbɛk ] * May 9, 1723 in socks Halanda, now the town Ale, † December 23, 1805 in Hasslöv ) was a Swedish pastor, world traveler and naturalist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Osbeck ".

Life

Osbeck began studying at Uppsala University in 1745 and was in the same year for students of Carl Linnaeus. From 1750 to 1752 he took, initially employed as a ship's priest, on a trip to China and East Asia in part, that led him to the region around Canton and on the island of Java. On his return, he had 900 new species of plants here and handed these Linnaeus. In 1760 he was appointed parish priest in Hasslöv in the province of Halland, 1773 and provost in 1778 Doctor of Divinity.

Osbeck was since 1758 a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and one of the founding members of the Kungliga Vetenskaps -och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg.

Ehrentaxon

Osbeck in honor of the genus L. Osbeckia the plant family of the Black Mouth family ( Melastomataceae ) was named.
