Peipsiääre Parish

Peipsiääre is a rural municipality in the Estonian Tartu county with an area of 31 km ². It has 831 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2010).

The municipality is located directly on Lake Peipus. In addition to the main town Kolkja for rural community includes the villages Kasepää, Savka, Sipelga and Varnja.

The people live partly on fishing and onion cultivation. The majority of people belong to the Orthodox faith of the Old Believers who fled from religious persecution in the 18th century from Russia to the western shore of Lake Peipus. The churches and prayer houses have been renovated after regaining of Estonian independence with money from the European Union and are also accessible for tourists.
