Pekela

History

Pekela bears his name since 1599, earned as settlers from the west of the Netherlands land along the river Pekel. It took the occurring there peaty soil for peat extraction. When was Louis Napoleon from 1806 to 1810 King of Holland, the community was separated into Oude Pekela (Alt - Pekela ) and Nieuwe Pekela ( New Pekela ). In 1990, the two parts were reunited to the municipality Pekela.

Until the 20th century Pekela was known because of the straw board production. Because the working conditions were bad, there were a lot of sympathy for communism.
