Pele (deity)

Pele is a fire and Hawaiian volcano goddess by faith.

According to legend, she sent her father away from Kahiki ( Tahiti), because she was short-tempered and her older sister Namaka ( or Na - maka -o- Kahai ), goddess of the sea fighting. In a canoe, which she got from her oldest brother Kamohoalii ( the king of sharks), they left their original homeland and came to Hawaii, where she created on different islands with her magic wand Paoa volcanoes. Her sister Na - maka -o- Kahai followed her and fought them with their available water floods.

On the slopes of Haleakala on Maui, there was a great battle in which Pele apparently succumbed and was mourned by her family. But when the victorious Na - maka -o- Kahai looked back during their return, they could tell by the ascending smoke that Pele had again produced on the island of Hawaii their volcanic fire, and they gave up the fight.

Various volcanological phenomena were named after her, like the hair of Pele, tears of Pele, limu o Pele and a large volcano on the moon Io.
