Pelé (footballer born 1978)

Pedro Miguel Cardoso Monteiro ( born 2 May 1978 in Albufeira ) is a Portuguese football player. From 2007 to 2009 the defender was the English first division side West Bromwich Albion under contract.

Career

Association

Pele started his career with Imortal DC, before moving to the then Portuguese second division club SC Farense after five years. After their descent had stood firm in the third division, the defensive player opted for a re- transfer and signed for season 2003/ 04, at the capital club Belenenses Lisbon. In Belenenses Pelé Erstligadebüt be announced on August 23, 2003 at 2:4 against Sporting Lisbon. By the time he played himself into the starting lineup and became a top performer. On 6 March 2005, he scored his only league goal for Belenenses 1-0 win against local rivals Sporting.

July 19, 2006 Pelé signed a contract with FC Southampton and moved into the English Football League Championship. On 30 December 2006 he scored his first goal for the Saints against Leicester City. In the course of the season Pele moved from the central defense and midfield, and is formed there along with Jermaine Wright a defensive block. Because of injuries to Darren Powell and Claus Lundekvam the end of the season they moved the learned defender back into the defense. On August 9, 2008 it was announced that Pelé replaced after one year at Southampton for a million pounds to West Bromwich Albion. On the first day of the season 2007/ 08 he made his debut for the Baggies against Burnley. After a year at West Bromwich, the rise was clear in the Premier League. His debut match in England's top flight gave Pelé 17 January 2009 against Middlesbrough FC. In the 39th minute, he came on for Leon Barnett. The game was won 3-0.
