The species is widely distributed in temperate Europe.

Way of life

The females lay eggs in July, which hatch the caterpillars in August. They are nocturnal and feed on flowers and fruits among others the following food plants:

  • Stinking Goosefoot ( Chenopodium vulvaria )
  • Lambsquarters ( Chenopodium album )
  • Good King Henry ( Chenopodium bonus-henricus )
  • Rod reporting ( Atriplex patula )
  • Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

During the day the larvae hide curled like the number "2" in fruits of forage crops. The solitary caterpillars are mature in September and then pupate in a sheltered place in loose soil in a slight cocoon. The pupae overwinter, the moths emerge the following year in July. The pupae overwinter occasionally a second time.

Bergmann describes the moth as " indicator species of rubble herbaceous communities with abundant stocks of fodder plants on sunny slopes of fresh earth and gravel hill in open corridors of the hot arid regions of the plains ." The adults hide during the day on the ground, at night they can be found on flowers, artificial light sources or baits.
