Penaia Ganilau

Ratu Sir Penaia Kanatabatu Ganilau GCMG, KCVO, KBE, DSO ( born July 28, 1918 in Somosomo on Taveuni, Fiji; † December 15, 1993 in Washington, DC, United States) was the first President of Fiji. His term began on 8 December 1987 and was prematurely terminated by his death. Previously he worked since 1983 the Governor-General of Fiji, who represented the legitimate representative of the Queen of Fiji, Elizabeth II.

Due to his illness he had in 1992 transferred most of his duties to the vice president and incoming president Kamisese Mara. Penaia Ganilau died in Washington, D.C. in the United States, where he was due to his illness.
