The place belongs to speech de Judiarias ( Portuguese for: Network of Jewish quarter ), an association of places with historically significant Jewish communities.

History

The Visigoth king Vamba comes after blank guesswork out Penamacor. His first city rights ( Foral ) was the site in 1189 by King Sancho I, who Penamacor to Gualdim Pais gave. The town grew with the onset of colonization policy, and got importance due to its strategic location in the line of defense against Aragon and Castile. He was attached with castles and raised 1199 for Vila ( town with administrative privileges). 1217 confirmed King II D.Afonso city rights by King Manuel I in 1510 renewed.

Penamacor is the seat of an eponymous district ( concelho ) in the district of Castelo Branco. June 30, 2011 had the circle 5652 inhabitants in an area of 563.8 km ².

In the east borders the county on Spain, the Portuguese Neighboring districts are (clockwise starting from the north ): Sabugal, Idanha -a-Nova, Castelo Branco and Fundão.
