The Penang Bridge ( Malay: Pulau Pinang Jambatan ) is a 13.5 -kilometer-long cable-stayed bridge in Malaysia. It connects the town of Gelugor, Penang, Seberang Prai on with the Malaysian mainland.

Construction of the bridge began in 1980 and it was opened to public traffic on 14 September 1985. The construction costs amounted to RM 800 million ( EUR 175 million ), excluding the cost of land purchase. The construction work was carried out by a consortium led by Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company ( Korea) Ltd. and United Engineers Malaysia Berhad ( UEM ).

The bridge is chargeable for all vehicles, you have to pay the toll only on the way towards the island.

Because chronic congestion began in 2007 the construction work for the expansion of the low bridge sections from four to six lanes. The cable-stayed bridge supported segment has already been done in the construction of six lanes.

Adopted in 2007, the Malaysian Parliament plans to build a second bridge. The "Second Penang Bridge" named compound is further placed to the south and therefore be approximately 24 kilometers long. It is part of the development plan " Ninth Malaysia Plan."
