Peñas

Peñas is a village in the department of La Paz in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

Peñas is the central place of the Canton Peñas district ( bolivian: Municipio) Batallas in the province of Los Andes and is at an altitude of 3989 m on the Bolivian Altiplano. Lake Titicaca in the West is just 10 km away, 30 km north-east of the village lies the ridge of the Cordillera Muñecas which here reaches peak heights of up to 6,000 m.

Geography

Peñas is located on the Bolivian plateau between the Andes mountain ranges, the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Central in the west to the east. The region exhibits a pronounced daytime air, wherein the average temperature variation during the day more marked than in the course of the year.

The average annual temperature of the region is located at 9 ° C, the average monthly values ​​vary only slightly between 6 ° C in July and 10 ° C in November and December (see climate chart Batallas ). The annual precipitation is about 600 mm, the monthly rainfall range from less than 15 mm during the months of June to August and between 100 and 120 mm from December to February.

Traffic network

Peñas is located at a distance of 58 kilometers of road north-west of La Paz, the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz the highway Ruta 2 through El Alto and Villa Vilaque leads in a northwesterly direction to Patamanta and Palcoco. Three kilometers Palcoco branches off a dirt road to the north and reached after twelve kilometers Peñas.
