Penelope Farmer

Penelope Jane Farmer ( born June 14, 1939 in Westerham, Kent) is a British author, who is known in addition to some novels for adults, especially through their children's books.

Life

Penelope Farmer was born 1939 in Westerham, Kent, the daughter of Hugh Robert MacDonald and Penelope Boothby Farmer and has an older twin sister. After attending a private school, she began to study history at St Anne's College, Oxford University, which she completed in 1960. Subsequently, she studied social sciences at Bedford College, London, for which she received a diploma in 1962. Between 1961 and 1963 she also worked as a teacher in London. From her first marriage, 1962-1977 Penelope Farmer has two children, in 1984 she married again. She now lives alternately in London and the Canary Islands.

Services

The majority of her life devoted Penelope Farmer writing books. In 1960 she published with The China People is a collection of fairy -like short stories for children. With The Summer Birds appeared in 1962, the first coherent children's book in which for the first time the sisters Emma and Charlotte Makepeace emerge who also play in their following works in winter and Emma Charlotte Sometimes a central role. The Summer Birds was nominated for the 1963 Carnegie Medal. The 1969 published story Charlotte Sometimes on the journey of the little Charlotte Makepeace is today best-known work by Penelope Farmer. Became famous for the book, not least by the eponymous song by English band The Cure in 1981, the text of which consists of mostly literally taken over passages of the book. Farmer also published some books with mythological content, mainly from Greek mythology.
