The Raspberry Clearwing ( Pennisetia hylaeiformis ) is a butterfly of the family of the Clearwing ( Sesiidae ).

Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 18-31 millimeters, and have brown forewings. These are characterized by a narrow transparent wedge box and a small consisting of three cells outer glass box. The veins M3 and Cu1 of the hind wings are long stalks. The sensors are bristle- shaped and double kammzähnig in the males. The proboscis is regressed. The thorax is colored black with the wings. The located on the abdomen yellow rings in each case have the same width. The juxtaposition is large and tubular. In females, the lamella is postvaginalis broad and sclerotized. The ductus bursae is twisted spirally.

The caterpillars are whitish and have a black head.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in Eurasia, they are found in Central, North and parts of Southern Europe. In the British Isles it is not represented. The species inhabited forest edges and clearings as well as riverside with stocks of raspberry.

Way of life

The host plant of the raspberry - wing moth is the raspberry (Rubus idaeus ), where the larvae about two years living in the roots. They pupate in May in the stem of the host plant close to the ground.

Flight times and caterpillars

The Raspberry Clearwing flies in one generation from June to August, in Central Europe from mid-June to mid-August. The moths are active during the day, but avoid the midday heat.

Parasitoids of larvae of Himbeerglasflüglers are various parasitic wasps ( Ichneomonidae ) and brackish species of wasps ( Braconidae ) such as Liotryphon punctulatus, Apanteles glomeratus, Ipobracon triangularis, Lissanota Impressor, Lissanota pimplator, Bracon erraticus and Macrocentrus marginator.

System

About the family relationship to the North American species Pennisetia marginata (Harris, 1839) is currently not known.
