Peñoles

Peñoles is a Mexican mines and mining company with headquarters in Mexico City. It belongs to the holding company Grupo BAL (English: Bal Group) and claims to be the largest private exporter of Mexico. Peñoles is listed on the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores in Índice de Precios y Cotizaciones (IPC).

The company owns mines in:

  • Fresnillo (the world's richest silver mine )
  • La Cienega ( Mexico's richest gold mine )
  • La Herradura ( Mexico's largest gold mine )
  • Naica
  • Francisco I. Madero ( Mexico's largest zinc mine )

The company, founded in 1887 is led by Alberto Bailleres. It employs around 8,400 people.

In December 2008, two miners were shot dead after she and another buddy were entered into a strike in a mine of the company. The strike protesting against the detention of two union leaders. The production in several mines came to a standstill after the union of the mines and metal workers had called for. The union leader Carlos Pavon Campos ( public relations) and Juan Linares Montufar ( security chief ) had been detained because they had allegedly embezzled a miners fund in the amount of 55 million U.S. dollars.
