People's Front for Democracy and Justice

The People's Front for Democracy and Justice ( Tigrinya: ህዝባዊ ግንባር ንደሞክራስን ፍትሕን, ህግደፍ, Arabic الجبهة الشعبية للديمقراطية والعدالة, Italian Fronte Popolare per la Democrazia e la Giustizia, English People's Front for Democracy and Justice, PFDJ ) is a political party and at the same time the only approved political organization or party in Eritrea.

It is the successor organization of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front ( Fronte Popolare di Liberation Eritreo, FPLE or EPLF ), which had fought in the Eritrean war of independence against Ethiopia. The PFDJ was created on the third congress of the EPLF in February 1994, on which the EPLF renamed and a National Charter for Eritrea adopted.

Political positions

According to his own statement it is aligned Marxist, corresponds according to Central European ideas rather African socialism and considers himself even as open to all nationalist Eritreans regardless of class affiliation and other political persuasion. President Isaias Afewerki is, the same holds also the presidency of Eritrea. The party itself is considered to be a broad political movement that will include all tolerated by their political currents within Eritrea. Thus it has the character of a single party, and Eritrea is considered to correspond to the state with one-party system.

The United Nations recommendations on the state independence of April 1993 disobeying, the predecessor party of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, the country is not liberalized, but significantly contributed to the overthrow of the old government, proclaimed the new State of Eritrea, after a referendum, and then nine months later in the Popular Front democracy and justice renamed. It is thus a part of the upheavals of the leadership team.
