People's Party (Ukraine)

The People's Party ( German for Narodna partija, in short: NP ) is a rural -based political party in Ukraine. She was represented in the Ukrainian Parliament through their membership in the bloc Lytvyn. Do not confuse it with the former Ukrainian People's Party, who belonged to the rival alliance Our ​​Ukraine.

History

The NP was established in 1996 under the name Peasant Party. Your ascent experienced the party, especially in 2004, when the Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn as President of the Ukrainian Parliament was. A year later it was renamed the People's Party to make their claim to representation for the total population clearer.

At the 2006 general election, she entered in alliance with three other parties ( Narodnyj Blok Lytwyna ), but failed due to the three- percent threshold for re- entry into parliament (score: 2.44 %). In 2007, when another election was scheduled, the People's Party changed its allies and joined the social democratic Labour Party of Ukraine together to form a new block Lytvyn. This made ​​the common re-entry into the national parliament (3.96 %). The chairman of the NP Lytvyn candidate in the 2010 presidential election but reached only 2.35% of the vote. In the parliamentary elections in 2012 the party could win two direct mandates and entered the Verkhovna Rada.

Political orientation and meaning

The People's Party saw itself in its early days as representing the interests of the rural population. This focus was softened after the Millennium. However, the party still has its strongholds in the country and is committed to the improvement of rural infrastructure. She continues to represent centrist positions.
