The VU was a nationalist and liberal left -oriented party of the Flemish population. 1978 separated the radical nationalists from the VU and later formed the Vlaams Blok (since 2004: Vlaams Belang ).

In contrast, the Spirit group worked together with the Socialists. They renamed themselves as the party several times and was named to last Sociaal - Liberal Partij. The end of 2009 they broke up in favor of the Greens.
