Peqin ( Albanian: Peqini, rare forms are Pekin / i and Pegin / i; Turkish Peklin ) is a village in central Albania with 6353 inhabitants ( 2011 census ), with the local authorities specify 8903 inhabitants ( 2007). Peqin is the capital of the homonymous district.

Geography

The city is located in the Myzeqe - level on the northern shore Shkumbin between Durres and Elbasan on the main route between these places, the Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII Peqin has a railway station of the Albanian Railways HSH. A new bypass road, designated as SH7 leads south past the place. A highway of Rrogozhina to Macedonia and to Peqin is currently being planned.

History

Even the Roman road Via Egnatia led by Peqin. A few kilometers east of Peqin numerous ancient remains were found. It is believed that there was the ancient Clodiana, where the two branches of the Via Egnatia from Durres and Apollonia combined. The first written mention of Peqin dates from the year 1431st time still called Biklenet, this was a very small place. The Muslim population supported the garrisons in Peqin, Durres and Bashtova and was therefore exempt 1569/70 of taxes. Evliya Çelebi visited the city in 1670 and described it in detail with the castle, the palace - like houses 400, four mosques, together with several other madrasas, Tekken, and other houses of worship.
