Perambalur district

The district Perambalur (Tamil: பெரம்பலூர் மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Administrative center is the eponymous town Perambalur.

Geography

The district Perambalur is located in the central inland Tamil Nadu. With an area of ​​1,748 square kilometers, it is one of the smallest districts of Tamil Nadu. The eastern part of the district is flat, in the west the terrain rises to the Shevaroy Mountains, an isolated foothills of the Eastern Ghats, on. Neighboring districts are Cuddalore in the north- east, in the southeast Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli in the southwest and Salem in the Northwest.

The district Perambalur is divided into three taluks Perambalur, Kunnam and Veppanthattai.

History

The area of present-day district Perambalur was under the rule of changing dynasties, before it become a part of British India in 1801. The British annexed the area as part of the district of Tiruchirappalli in the province of Madras. After Indian independence, the area came in 1956 to the newly formed State of Madras (now Tamil Nadu ). As an independent district Perambalur exists since 1995, when the district Tiruchirappalli was divided into the three districts of Tiruchirappalli, Karur and Perambalur. 2001, the Ariyalur district was separated from the eastern parts of the district of Perambalur, a year later, but reintegrated into this. In November 2007 it was again the re-establishment of the district Ariyalur.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the district Perambalur has 564 511 inhabitants. In terms of population, it is the smallest district of Tamil Nadu. The population density is below average: With 323 inhabitants per square kilometer, it is the third lowest of the state and is well below the average of Tamil Nadu ( 555 inhabitants per square kilometer). Compared to the last census in 2001 the population had grown by 14.4 percent. The growth rate thus corresponds to the average of Tamil Nadu ( 15.5 per cent). The literacy rate is 74.7 percent lower than the mean of the state ( 80.3 percent) and is only slightly above the all-India average of 74.0 per cent. The district Perambalur is very rural: only 17.1 percent of the population live in cities. The degree of urbanization is among the lowest in Tamil Nadu and is well below the average for the state ( 48.5 percent). According to the 2001 census, 82.2 percent of the working population of the district are engaged in agriculture.

The population of the district are the Hindus according to the 2001 census, with 93.2 percent, a large majority. 5.0 percent of the population profess Islam. Christians are a small minority, at 1.7 percent.
