Perinatal mortality

The perinatal mortality or perinatal mortality rate is the number of child deaths in the perinatal period, that includes stillbirths and deaths up to 7 days after birth. This number is in this case based on the total number of 1,000 and stillbirths.

Statistics

There are regional differences in perinatal mortality in Germany. In the period from 2005 to 2009 there were in Saxony with an average of 453 deaths per 100,000 births, the lowest perinatal mortality, while North Rhine-Westphalia with an average of 612 cases showed the highest value ( 12% above the national average of 545 cases). An increased perinatal mortality has also been provided in Bremen, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg -Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. In these countries is observed, contrary to the nationwide development from 2005 to 2009, a slight increase. In Baden- Württemberg, Thuringia and Bavaria, the perinatal mortality was not only lower than the national average, it took between 2005-2009 from even further.
