Persea

Ender fruit avocado tree ( Persea americana)

Persea is a genus of plants of the laurel family ( Lauraceae ). It is mainly native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, but some species are also found in Asia. The most common types are the avocado ( Persea americana ) and the Indian Persea ( Persea indica).

Description

They are evergreen shrubs or medium-sized trees. The thin bark is reddish brown. The alternate, at first hairy, later leathery glossy leaves smell aromatic. The hermaphrodite flowers are yellow and hairy. The bloom is not divided into calyx and corolla, so it is tepals. The outer Tepals are shorter than the inner. There are nine stamens present. The ripe fruits are ball-shaped or pear-shaped, deep blue to black berries. The tepals are preserved at the base of the ripe fruit.

System

There are about 150 species in the genus. The genus Persea is divided into three subgenera: The Asian subgenus Machilus is considered by many authors as a separate genus Machilus (for example, in the Flora of China). Another closely related species, Beilschmiedia is sometimes incorporated into the genus Persea.
