According to Article 33 of the Indonesian Constitution of 1945 specified that the soil, water and natural mineral resources belong to the state and should be used for the benefit of the people. After that, the Indonesian government has the duty to manage the oil and gas reserves in the country. On December 10, 1957, the state-owned company was founded Permina. The company's management was faced with the Indonesian Colonel Ibnu Sutowo. Ibnu Sutowo the second man was General Abdul Haris Nasution behind the Indonesian military. With the position Sutowos in state-owned enterprises Permina the Indonesian military tried to control the oil industry in Indonesia. The company sold nationwide as a company in Indonesia in the coming years in an oil monopoly. Permina founded the school Apprentice Technical School ( Sekolah Kader Teknik ) in Brandan to obtain experts for the oil industry. To make this goal was established in 1962 the Oil Academy in Bandung. In the 1960s the state monopoly of oil production has been eased and foreign oil companies in Indonesia has been granted access. 1968 merged the company Permina and Pertamin and the state enterprise Pertamin arose. After the merger in 1968, the oil production of the company grew steadily.

However, it was achieved in Indonesia, the Peak Oil in 1977, but Indonesia still remained an important oil exporter and member of OPEC. With strong population and economic growth in Indonesia in 2007, but finally a net importer of oil and subsequently announced in 2008 its withdrawal from OPEC. The use of new technology and the help of foreign oil companies succeeded in recent years to keep the funding level reasonably constant and halt the dramatic decline before the promotion. At the same time one tries to use natural gas as a substitute for oil, since Indonesia has large natural gas reserves and is one of the largest natural gas exporters in the world. The TransJakarta express bus service, for example, largely driven by the conversion to natural gas buses, as the Indonesian gas production recorded strong growth and is expected to continue to rise with great pace.
