Peschany Island

Pestschany (Russian Остров Песчаный ) is an uninhabited, isolated in the Laptev Sea Spit lying off the north coast of Russia. Administratively it belongs to the Nationalulus ( Rajon ) Anabarski the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia ).

Geography

Pestschany is located 74 kilometers east of the island Bolshoi Begichev, 85 km east of the Taimyr Peninsula, 62 km north of the Yakut mainland. The 12 km long, unusual elliptical Spit is interrupted in the east, so that it consists of four flat, sandy and barren islands that surround a roughly 6 × 4 km wide lagoon. In appearance it is thus similar to the tropical atolls.

The Spit has a width between 600 and 900 meters. When an arc length of the elliptical Spit of 23 kilometers, this results in a total land area of about 17 km ².
