Pétange

Petingen ( Luxembourgish Péiteng, French Pétange ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in the canton Esch -sur-Alzette. It is the area after just under twelve square kilometers, one of the smallest communities of Luxembourg, but the number of inhabitants according to the fifth largest. The proportion of foreigners in 2010 was 44.7 percent. The city charter was the main town ( chef-lieu d'une commune) not yet awarded.

Petingen is dominated by the steel industry. Added as a new economic pillar are under the European Development Pole PED (since 1985) companies in the manufacturing industry. In addition to the traces of the industrial past, however, many parts of the community have retained their rural character.

Location

Petingen is located on the Chiers in the southwest of Luxembourg and is bordered to the west by Belgium.

Policy

The council is made up due to the increased population since 2011 of seventeen members. The aldermen are provided by CSV and LSAP, which together have won thirteen seats; the two representatives of the Green Party and one each of the DP and the ADR form the opposition.

History

Petingen is first mentioned in a charter from the year 938 under the name Perdgitten. Professor Jos. According to Meyers, the name Petingen from the name of the Frankish tribe Petto comes from.

1601, the border between Lorraine and Luxembourg has been set. Petingen went to Luxembourg and Rodingen to Lorraine. But since 1795, the commune existed in its current form, and from the villages Lamadelaine, Petingen and Rodingen.

The largest population growth experienced Petingen, as the late 19th century on the hills around the Petingen Minette was promoted, the ironworks at Rodingen arose and the village was connected to the railway.

On 9 September 1944 Petingen was the first town in Luxembourg liberated by the U.S. Army. In honor of Hyman P. Josefson, the first American soldier who fell on Luxembourg soil, a monument was erected.

Traffic

Petingen was an important railway junction in the past and is now connected with a railway station and the additional stops Lamadelaine and Rodingen to the rail network of the CFL.

Culture, nature and leisure

On the Titelberg archaeologists have unearthed an oppidum and a temple of Treverians.

The Industrial and Railway Park Fond-de -Gras is often used on excursions and as an event scene. The museum railway " Train 1900 " combines Fond-de -Gras with Petingen over part of the railway line Petingen -Bois CHATIER. The terminus of the " Train 1900 " in Petingen is located opposite the CFL reception building.

The nature reserve Giele Botter covers the territory of a former opencast mining system; it is accessible by trails, which also offer a unique view of the valley of the grain. In the south of Petingen forest reserve Prënzebierg offers opportunities for recreation. In Rodingen there is the swimming pool Kordal ( PiKo ) with a retractable roof and a 80 meter slide.

Twinning

Petingen has concluded with Maribor in Slovenia and Schio in Italy twinning.
