Pete Backor

Pete Backor ( born April 29, 1919 in Fort William, Ontario; † 30 June 1988) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach, who played from 1944 to 1945 for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League.

Career

Pete Backor began his career as a hockey player with the St. Catharines Saints, for whom he played from 1939 to 1944 in the Ontario Hockey Association. He was taken by the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League under contract then, with whom he in his only NHL game time the prestigious Stanley Cup won in the 1944/45 season. After he started the season 1946/47, at the Hollywood Wolves of the Pacific Coast Hockey League, he played until 1954 for the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League with whom in 1952 he won the Calder Cup. During this time he was appointed as five times in the AHL First All -Star Team. From 1954 to 1956 played Backor for the Sault Ste. Marie Indians in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association, where he ended his career as a player. In the first of his two seasons with the Indians Backor acted all season long as player-coach.
