Peter Brunt

Peter Astbury Brunt FBA ( born June 23, 1917 in Coulsdon, Surrey, † November 5, 2005 in Oxford ) was a British historian.

Peter Brunt studied until 1939 Classical Studies and Philosophy at Oriel College, Oxford University. During the Second World War he worked in the Department for Transport before he returned to Oxford to continue his studies. From 1947 to 1951 Brunt was a lecturer at the University of St Andrews. From 1951 to 1967 he was a lecturer at the Camden Chair of Ancient History at Oxford. After two years ( 1968-1970 ) at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, he became a Fellow of Brasenose College, succeeding Ronald Syme on the Camden chair at Oxford, a position he held until 1982. From 1980 to 1983 he was president of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies.

The focus of scientific activity Brunt was on the history of the Roman Republic, especially the social history. In his major work Italian Manpower 225 BC- AD 14 he was concerned with the population growth of Italy in the Republican period. But even on issues of the imperial and Greek history, he has written numerous works.
