Peter was Biirgel 1996-2002 leader of the CSU in the city council of Dachau. In 2002 he ran for the office of Mayor of the town of Dachau against the incumbent Kurt Piller ( OVR ). Since it did not come to an absolute majority of one of the two opponents in the first round, March 3, 2002, they had to go to the ballot. In this election, a nationwide sensational election fraud scandal took place. The run-off election on 17 March 2002, which Biirgel won by 73 votes majority against Piller, had to be repeated.

This Biirgel clearly won with a majority of 1221 votes.

This commitment culminated in the 2007 election as President of Biirgel EuroArt, an association of 80 artists places from 21 European countries.

Peter Biirgel was confirmed at the municipal office in 2008, where he had to retire from the SPD here again in the runoff election against challenger Volker Koch. In 2014 he lost to his challenger, Florian Hartmann ( SPD) in the runoff.
