Peter Gwynn-Jones

Sir Peter Gwynn -Jones, KCVO FSA ( born 1940 in Cape Town, † 21 August 2010) was an English Herald and genealogist, and from 1995 to 31 March 2010, the highest-ranking British royal coat of arms Garter Principal King of Arms and thus head of the Heralds of the College of Arms.

Biography

He attended Wellington College, Berkshire, and studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduating, he became in 1970 assistant to the then Garter King of Arms Sir Anthony Richard Wagner. In 1973 he was appointed a full member of the College of Arms as the herald assistant Blue Mantle Pursuivant of Arms. 1982 promoted to Lancaster Herald of Arms, he took over the post of House overseer of the College. In 1995 he was Garter Principal King of Arms.

Gwynn -Jones in 1995 inspector of regimental flags and 1996 Inspector of the Royal Air Force Badge. As Garter Principal King of Arms in 1995 he became a genealogist of the English top order, the Order of the Garter, the Order of the Bath, the Order of St Michael and St George and Order of St. John in England.

Orders, Awards and Affiliations

Gwynn -Jones in 1994, Lieutenant ( LVO ) and 1998 Commander ( CVO ) of the Royal Victorian Order. In 2010 he became Knight Commander of that order. 1976 Serving Brother ( SBStJ ) and 1995 Knight ( KStJ ) of St John.

Since 1997 he was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London. From 1981 to 1994 he was secretary of the Genealogical - Heraldic Society Harleian and 1996 Vice - President of the Heraldry Society of London.
