Peter I of Aragon and Navarre

Peter I (c. 1068; . † 27-28 September 1104 ) was a king of Aragon and Navarre from the house Jiménez. He was the eldest son of King Sancho I / V. of Aragon - Navarre from his first marriage to Isabella of Urgell.

Life

Peter came to the throne of Aragon in 1094, after his father was killed in the unsuccessful siege of the Moorish city of Huesca. He continued the fight and was able, after the victory in the Battle of Alcoraz finally conquer on November 18, 1096 against the Taifakönig of Zaragoza and its Castilian allies Huesca. In order to continue the Reconquista, Peter 1097 allied with Rodrigo Diaz " El Cid " de Vivar and married his son with his daughter. After a siege of more than a year he was on October 18, 1100 also conquer the long embattled Barbastro final and thus move the frontiers of Aragon to the Muslim Al -Andalus permanently to the Ebro. Supposedly intended Peter in the year 1101, an armed pilgrimage to Jerusalem to emulate the knights of the First Crusade, which he had been but prohibited by Pope Paschal II, who had instead encouraged him to continue the struggle in the Heath home. The credibility of this story, however, is considered to be low. In the fall of 1102, Peter began the siege of Saragossa, the most powerful Moorish Taifakönigsreichs and main rival of Aragón. However, a massive counter- offensive by the Moors under the leadership of the Almoravids in which his cousin was killed by V. Ermengol Urgell, forced him to abort the siege.

Peter died on 27 or 28 September 1104 at the age of about 35 years ago, shortly after his children had died; he was buried with them in the San Juan de la Peña Monastery. His expansionist policy against Zaragoza was " the fighter " successfully continued by his half-brother Alfonso, who thus at the establishment of Aragón finished as the second Christian power in the Iberian peninsula, with Leon - Castile.

Marriages and descendants

In January 1086 Peter married in Jaca first wife Agnes of Poitou († 1097 ), daughter of Duke William VIII of Aquitaine. With her he had two children:

After Agnes died, he married on August 16, 1097 in Huesca, the Italian noblewoman Bertha (c. 1075; † before 1111), possibly a daughter of Count Peter I of Savoy and Turin.
