Peter Lehmann (winemaker)

Peter Lehmann ( born August 18, 1930 in Angaston, † June 28, 2013 in Adelaide ) was an Australian businessman and winemaker.

Family and Childhood

Peter Lehmann came from an immigrant family with Prussian roots. His father was a Lutheran pastor. He died when Peter Lehmann was 14 years old. It decided at age 17 to leave the school to learn the craft of the winemaker at the winery Yalumba.

Career

From 1947 to Peter Lehmann worked for ten years at Yalumba and became one of the leading winemaker of the Barossa Valley. In the early 1960s he became the Chefwinemaker Saltram, one of the most important and leading wineries this time. In 1977 he gave up this position and, together with his wife Margaret in South Australia's Barossa Valley winery Masterton Barossa Vignerons. This was renamed in 1986 in Peter Lehmann Wines and officially listed on 5 August 1993 as a public company on the Australian Stock Exchange. In 2003 the estate was bought by the Swiss Donald M. Hess, but the management remained with the oldest son Doug in the Lehmann family.

2003, 2006 and 2008 was named best Australian producer Peter Lemann Wines at the International Wine & Spirit Competition ( IWSC ).

Peter Lehmann Wines are exported to more than 50 % abroad (mainly U.S., UK and New Zealand).
