Peter Maag

Ernst Peter Johannes Maag ( born May 10, 1919 in St. Gallen, † April 16, 2001 in Verona ) was a Swiss conductor.

Life and work

Peter Maag was principal conductor of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf from 1952 to 1955, after four seasons as General Music Director of the Opera Bonn. In 1959 he made ​​his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden with Mozart's Magic Flute and the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. In the same year he appeared for the first time in the U.S. - at the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. In 1961 he made ​​his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago with Mozart's Così fan tutte, 1962 at the Salzburg Festival with Mozart's Idomeneo.

From 1964 to 1968 Peter Maag served as chief conductor of the Vienna Volksoper, 1972, he made ​​his debut at the Metropolitan Opera with Mozart's Don Giovanni, and was appointed in the same year as the artistic director of the Teatro Regio di Parma. From 1974 he was principal conductor at the Teatro Regio di Torino, then the RAI Symphony Orchestra (Turin ) and the Orquesta Nacional de España. He was music director of the Bern Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1991, and Chief Conductor of the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto from 1983 to 2001. Peter Maag has a son, the children's book author Georg Maag. Maags first wife was Jasmina Božin, a Bosnian stage designer. With his second wife Marica Franchi ( Marika ) he has a daughter.
