Peter Rono

Peter Kipchumba Rono ( born July 31, 1967 in Kapsabet ) is a former Kenyan middle distance runner and Olympic champion in the 1500 m.

Rono had a short but steep athletic career in the years 1984 to 1988. In 1984 he succeeded at the age of 17 years at the Junior World Championships a double success over 1500 m and 5000 m, and 1985 he was in Nairobi African champion in cross-country running. At the Junior World Championships 1986 in Athens, he won silver, and at the World Athletics Championships 1987 in Rome he came to the semifinals.

He had his greatest success at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Here he won the 1500-meter gold medal in front of the set as a favorite British Peter Elliott and Jens- Peter Herold from the GDR.

He sat next to his studies at Mount Saint Mary's College continued his athletic career with varying success. In 1989 he won the silver medal at the Universiade, and in 1991 he retired at the World Championships in Tokyo in the semifinals. He later became a coach at his alma mater.
