Peter Stadlen

Peter Stadlen (* July 14, 1910 in Vienna, † 21 January 1996, London) was a composer, pianist and musicologist who dealt in particular with the authentic interpretation of the works of Beethoven.

Life

Stadlen, who was born in Vienna, brought in 1937 Anton Webern's Variations for Piano, Op 27 for the premiere. In addition, he was the soloist in the European premiere of Arnold Schoenberg's Piano Concerto, Op 42 After the "Anschluss " he had to leave Austria and emigrated to England. After the outbreak of war he was interned in Australia 1940/1941 as enemy alien. In 1946 he took on British citizenship.

Due to a neurological disorder, he was later forced to give up playing the piano. In 1959, he became a music critic for the Daily Telegraph, for whom he was 26 years active, the last ten years as chief critic.

Stadlen dealt for many years with Beethoven Metronomisierungen who doubt some performers and hold for too fast.

He was married since 1946 to the philosopher born Hedi Stadlen Simon ( 1916-2004 ) and left two sons, Nicholas and Godfrey. His estate passed into the archives of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.
