Peter Swart

Peter Swart (* July 5, 1752 in Schoharie, New York, † November 3, 1829 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1807 and 1809 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Peter Swart grew up during the British colonial period. He attended community schools. Swart studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Schoharie. In 1795 he was judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Schoharie County. He sat in the years 1798 and 1799 in the New York State Assembly.

As opponents of a strong central government, he joined at that time, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1806 for the 10th Congress, he was in the 13th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Thomas Sammons on March 4, 1807. He retired after the March 3, 1809 out of the Congress.

In the years 1810 and 1813 he was sheriff in Schoharie County. Between 1817 and 1820 he sat in the Senate from New York. After that he went back in Schoharie his work as a lawyer after. He died there on November 3, 1829 and was buried at the Old Stone Fort Cemetery.
