Peter W. Barlow

Peter William Barlow ( born 1 February 1809 in Woolwich, Kent, † May 20 1885 in London) was a British civil engineer.

Life

He was the son of Peter Barlow (1776-1862), mathematics and physics at the Military Academy in Woolwich taught. His brother William Henry Barlow was also a prominent civil engineer.

He built in 1862 the Lambeth Bridge in London, a suspension bridge, which is now replaced by another structure. In 1864 he patented an improved iron shield tunnel, which was used by James Henry Greathead in the construction of the Thames Tunnel Tower Subway in London in 1870. It provided improvements over the old design by Marc Isambard Brunel, which had previously been used for a Thames Tunnel ( see shield tunneling ).

In 1845 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society.
