Peter Wieselgren

Peter (also: per) Wieselgren Jonasson ( born October 1, 1800 Spånhult ( in the parish Vislanda ), Småland, † October 10, 1877 in Gothenburg ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian, literary historian and biographer. He became known as a leading activist in the next early Swedish temperance movement.

Life

Wieselgren, son of the landowner Jonas Jonsson, was chosen as a child to the profession of a pastor. After attending school in Växjö, he studied from 1820 at Lund University in 1823 and earned a master's degree. In 1824 he became a lecturer of History of Literature in Lund, shortly after adjunct for aesthetics. After a long stay in Stockholm in 1828, he returned back to Lund and worked at the University Library, from 1830 as vice - librarian. In 1833 he was ordained and took a pastorate in Västerstad and Östraby in Skåne. Already in 1834 he was appointed provost of the church district ( contract- ). After the doctorate in theology. 1845 moved Wieselgren 1847 in a pastorate in Helsingborg. From 1857 until his death he was provost in Gothenburg.

Importance

Wieselgren was involved in numerous literary projects. So he opened up the archive of the noble family De la Gardie, wrote hymns, wrote a five-volume history of Swedish literature from its beginnings to 1844 and was a member of Samfund promote utgivande av handskrifter rörande Scandinavia historia ( Society for the Publication of manuscripts, the history of Scandinavia on ).
