Petinomys

The Zwerggleithörnchen ( Petinomys ) are a common South Asian genus of flying squirrels. Despite the name, not all species particularly small. On the contrary, includes some exceptionally large species in the genus. Even the smallest Zwerggleithörnchen be exceeded at very small size of the Kleinstgleithörnchen.

Seven species are expected here:

  • Hagen flying squirrel, Petinomys hageni ( Jentink 1888), Sumatra, Borneo
  • Siberut flying squirrel, Petinomys lugens ( Thomas 1895), Mentawai Islands
  • Travancore flying squirrel, Petinomys fuscocapillus ( Jerdon 1847), southern India, Sri Lanka
  • Mindanao flying squirrel, Petinomys crinitus ( Hollister 1911), Mindanao and adjacent islands
  • Mustache flying squirrel, Petinomys genibarbis ( Horsfield 1822), Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatra, Borneo
  • Temminck's Flying Squirrel, Petinomys setosus ( Temminck 1844), Myanmar, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo
  • Front man flying squirrel, Petinomys front manni ( Jentink 1890), Malay Peninsula, Borneo

The smallest species is the front man flying squirrel with a body length of 10 cm and an approximately equally long tail. The largest species, the Moustache Flying Squirrel, is with 40 cm far from being dwarfed. All Zwerggleithörnchen are inhabitants of tropical rain forests. They are generally poorly understood, probably in the lifestyle but other flying squirrel match.

The IUCN lists the Indian subspecies of Travancore flying squirrel as endangered.
