The University Petru Maior in Targu Mures (Romania ) (Romanian: Universitatea Petru Maior ) - up to 1996 only University of Targu Mures - named after the historians and philologists Petru Maior (ca. 1756-1821 ). It was founded in 1960 with a focus on teacher training and 1991, 1995 developed the Technical University to University. Approximately 79 % of students were enrolled in October 2012 in bachelor's degree programs, 21 % in master's degree programs, and there were 26 doctoral students.

The University participated in collaboration with European partner universities (including the University of Strasbourg, Technical University of Košice and Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main ) in European projects for the development of higher education, often holds the lead. She conducts extensive research in all three faculties, promotes the founders training eg through summer schools and publishes several of its own publication series.
