Peyrepertuse

Peyrepertuse with a total area of ​​7000 m², the largest French fortress of the Cathars. It is located in the Languedoc- Roussillon region on a rock overlooking the valley of the river Verdouble, at 800 m altitude. At the foot of the hill on which the fort is built on the southern slope, is Duilhac- sous- Peyrepertuse. Below the northern slope, on the opposite side of the mountain, there is the Rouffiac -des- Corbières. From there you have a stunning panoramic view of the castle.

History

The lower part of the plant, the actual peyrepertuse was built in the 11th century. In it there is also the church of Sainte -Marie.

In 1226 the fort fell to the king of Aragon, who she lost in a three-day battle at France 1240. Saint Louis in 1242 enlarged the facility by the construction of the upper fort that bears the name of San Jordi.

Since 19 March 1908 the fortress peyrepertuse monument historique and thus stands under monument protection.
