Phaya Thai District

Phaya Thai ( Thai: พญาไท ) is one of the 50 districts (Khet ) of Bangkok, capital of Thailand. Phaya Thai is a northern downtown district on either side of Phahonyothin Road.

Phaya Thai also means one of the major roads in Bangkok ( Thanon Phaya Thai ) and a station of the Bangkok Skytrain ( Sathani Phaya Thai ), both of which are, however, now in the neighboring district Ratchathewi.

Geography

Phaya Thai is bounded on the north by Khlong Bang Sue, in the east of the Wiphawadi Rangsit Highway, in the south of Khlong Sam Sen and to the west of the railway line that runs from Hua Lamphong Train Station via the train station of Bang Sue to the whole of Thailand.

History

The Phaya Thai district was created in 1966, with one united parts of Dusit and Bang Kapi. The district is named after the Phaya Thai Road. Since then, the district has undergone many changes. 1973, the District Huai Khwang of Phaya Thai was cleaved. In 1978, the boundaries between Huai Khwang, Phaya Thai and Bang Kapi were adjusted to obtain a uniform distribution of population.

In 1989, the district Ratchathewi was created, which was formed from the southern area of the old Phaya Thai district. Finally, Phaya Thai had to give up the eastern sub-districts to the newly created Din Daeng District, so that today only a sub-district, Sam Sen Nai, is left.

The various changes today is the Phaya Thai Road and the Skytrain station no longer in Phaya Thai district, but in Ratchathewi and Pathum Wan.
