The nuclear power plant Phenix is a decommissioned nuclear power plant, which is located on the site of Marcoule nuclear plant about 30 kilometers north of Avignon in the French region of Languedoc -Roussillon in the department of Gard on the Rhône.

History

The nuclear power plant was built by the French company Electricité de France (EDF) and the Commissariat à l' énergie Atomique (CEA ) operated. In the nuclear reactor there was a sodium-cooled fast breeder reactor (SNR), a prototype reactor as a precursor for the nuclear power plant Creys - Malville ( Superphénix ) was used.

Construction of the reactor block was on November 1, 1968 he went on 13 December 1973 in operation. The nuclear power plant was from 1990 to 1996 only irregularly in operation, 1997, it was completely shut down. In February 1998 it was decided in the wake of the shutdown of the fast breeder Superphénix, Phenix to take back into service to carry out research in the field of fast breeder on. On 9 September 1998, the authorization for the power plant was issued again. After a renovation from 1998 to 2003, the nuclear power plant from 2004 was returned to service. In March 2009, the plant was removed from the network, tentatively in October 2009 and officially shut down on 1 February 2010.

The nuclear reactor had a net installed capacity of 130 megawatts ( MW) and a gross capacity of 140 MW. The thermal power was 563 MW. The cooling of the reactor block was performed with the Rhone water withdrawn. In good years of operation, the power plant fed nearly one billion kilowatt hours into the public power grid, on average, from 1974 to 2010, however, approximately one-third less.

The reactor was used for the production of electrical energy and for research into the technology of the fast breeder reactor. The main purpose was recently researching the transmutation of radioactive waste. There are 250 employees, including 60 operators.
