Phenylglyoxylic acid is a chemical compound selected from the group of carboxylic acids.
Production and representation
Phenylglyoxylic acid can be obtained by oxidation of mandelic acid with potassium permanganate, or by oxidation and subsequent hydrolysis of the methyl ester of mandelic acid by means of lead (IV ) acetate. An alternative synthesis is the hydrolysis of benzoyl cyanide.
The compound occurs as a metabolite of styrene and ethylbenzene.
Properties
Phenylglyoxylic is an off-white flammable solid, which is soluble in water.
Use
Phenylglyoxylic is used as a chemical synthesis for the production of other chemical compounds.
