Phenyl is a chemical compound selected from the group of organic isocyanates.

Production and representation

Phenyl may be obtained from aniline and phosgene, wherein more than 1,000 tons per year are produced or introduced.

Properties

Phenyl isocyanate is a lachrymatory, flammable, colorless to yellowish liquid with a pungent odor. In water it is hydrolyzed to aniline under carbon dioxide elimination.

Use

Phenyl isocyanate is used as a reagent for amines and alcohols for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, pesticides ( eg carbetamide ), textile auxiliaries (optical brightener), and plasticizers used in the coatings and photographic industries.

Safety

The vapors of phenyl isocyanate can form ( 51 ° C, ignition temperature 580 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
