Phil Cohran

Kelan Phil Cohran ( born May 8, 1927 in Oxford, Massachusetts) is an American jazz musician (trumpet, cornet, also French horn, baritone saxophone and percussion).

Life and work

Philip Cohran grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, played in the early 1950s in the band of Jay McShann, and then in a band of U.S. Navy. After his military service he was a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra of ( up to Ra 1961 Chicago left ). Heard he was on early Arkestra albums like Fate in a Pleasant Mood and Angels and Demons at Play. Cohran was already in the founding era to the members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians ( AACM ). From the late 1960s he worked with his formation Artistic Heritage Ensemble in a merger of African rhythms, funk and jazz improvisation. For the band belonged to the later Miles Davis guitarist Pete Cosey and members of the Hornblower group Earth, Wind & Fire. 1967/68 was the album On the Beach, on the Cohran an African thumb piano ( Frank Iphone ) plays. Cohran taught in later years at the Center for Inner City Studies at Northeastern Illinois University.

His eight sons from two marriages, who were trained by their parents musical, form the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, which has performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 2011.
