Phil Niekro

Philip Henry " Phil" Niekro ( born April 1, 1939 in Blaine, Ohio ) is a former American professional baseball player in Major League Baseball.

Biography

Phil Niekro with 318 wins one of the most successful pitcher in the history of Major League who worked mainly with the knuckleball. He began his career in 1964 with the Milwaukee Braves, where he remained faithful even after moving to Atlanta to 1994. His field game was considered excellent, as proven by his five Gold Glove Awards. Together with his brother, Joe Niekro, it forms the brothers with the most wins in Major League history. 539 victories are on the account of the Niekro brothers.

Niekro was very popular in Atlanta, since he did not leave the team that had a lot of bad seasons and also in the social sector was very much active. On August 5, 1973 Niekro threw a no- hitter in 9-0 win against the San Diego Padres.

As he dismissed the Braves in 1984, he signed at the age of 45 years, a contract with the New York Yankees. There he celebrated his 300th victory as a pitcher in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays on October 6, 1985. In 1986 and 1987 he pitched for the Cleveland Indians and the Blue Jays. After he was released in Toronto, the Atlanta Braves committed him for one last game so he could finish his career with the team where he started it.

That Niekro up to his 48th year of life could throw at the level of Major League, primarily arose knuckleball. This special casting gentle on the throwing arm and is for opposing batsmen hard to read.

After his career Niekro managed the woman baseball team the Colorado Silver Bullets. In 1997 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
