Philip Blommaert

Philipp Blommaert ( born August 24, 1809 in Ghent, † August 14, 1871 ) was a Flemish writer.

Work

He lived as a private scholar and as Hendrik Consciences friend and comrade in the struggle for the Dutch language. Since 1834, he had come out in the Dutch magazine Vaderlandsche Letteroefeningen with poems in Dutch, but had little further success because of the somewhat rough shape.

More important was the publication of Flemish seals from the 12th to the 14th century, such as Theophilus ( Ghent 1836, 2nd edition 1858), the Oudvlaemsche poems ( Ghent 1838-1851, three volumes ) and others, as well as his Dutch translation of the Nibelung in iambic verse.

However, his work is the vorzüglichstes Aloude geschiedenis the Belgae of Nederduitschers ( Ghent, 1849), in which he puts forward the view that the Low German regions are still called despite its political disunity as unity of the people to fulfill a high cultural and historical idea.

Blommaert also served as staff at several Belgian newspapers opposed the French influence and in 1840 with Jan - Frans Willems the main author of the well-known voice petitions (see also Flemish - Walloon conflict).
